How to remove metadata from iPhone photos

An iPhone records a lot about every shot. Here is what actually ends up in the file, what survives sharing, and how to remove it before the photo leaves your hands.

What an iPhone actually writes into a photo

Every picture the Camera app takes carries an EXIF block. It names the device (Apple, and the specific iPhone model), the lens used on multi-camera phones, and the exposure the camera chose — ISO, shutter speed and aperture. It records the moment of capture down to the second, and the software version that wrote the file.

If Location Services are enabled for the camera, the file also carries GPS latitude and longitude, often with altitude and a compass heading. That is the field people are usually surprised by: it is precise enough to identify a home, a workplace or a school from a single casual photo.

HEIC and JPEG both carry this block. Converting between the two does not remove it — a format change and a metadata strip are different operations.

What survives when you share an iPhone photo

This is where the intuition usually fails. Sharing is not one behaviour, it is several, and they differ in what they keep.

Large social platforms re-encode uploads for their own delivery, and the public copy generally loses most of the EXIF. That is a side effect of their processing, not a privacy guarantee they make to you, and it says nothing about what the platform itself received and stored.

Sending the original — as an email attachment, as a file in a messenger, over AirDrop, or through a cloud link — normally preserves the whole block, GPS included. iOS does offer a per-share control over whether location travels with the image, but it is a per-share decision, easy to forget and easy to get wrong under pressure.

The reliable order is the other way round: strip the metadata first, then share whatever you like, and stop having to reason about each channel's behaviour.

Removing it in the browser

You do not need an app for this. Open the EXIF cleaner, add the photo, and download the cleaned copy — the file is rewritten locally on your device and is never uploaded to a server.

Only the metadata is removed. The pixels, the resolution and the visible quality are untouched, so the cleaned copy looks exactly like the original.

If you want to see the difference rather than take it on trust, open the original in the EXIF viewer, then open the cleaned copy: the camera, date and GPS rows come back empty.

Frequently asked questions

Does turning off Location Services remove GPS from photos I already took?

No. It stops new photos from recording a location, but pictures already on the device keep the coordinates that were written when they were taken. Existing files have to be cleaned.

Does converting HEIC to JPEG remove the metadata?

No. Both formats carry an EXIF block, and a conversion normally copies it across. Changing the container and stripping the metadata are separate operations.

Does a screenshot of a photo contain EXIF?

A screenshot has no camera EXIF — there was no capture — so it carries no lens, exposure or GPS data. That absence is itself noticeable: a screenshot does not look like a camera original under inspection.
